Henry Smith MP column, RH Uncovered Magazine, February 2016
On Friday 4th March, I will be hosting the Crawley Apprenticeship & Jobs Fair at the Civic Hall.
The event runs from 10am until 3pm, and entry is of course free.
At the time of writing, Crawley unemployment is down further at 1.5 per cent, and those not in education or training at an all-time low but I am well aware that there is more I can do to help people.
For 2016, I have chosen to focus on Apprenticeships and further training, to help young people become ‘work ready’.
Although Crawley youth unemployment is low I feel this figure can be reduced further by giving young people the opportunity to train whilst in employment. I was recently pleased to be on site at Central Sussex College as their new STEM courses centre is nearing completion.
I was pleased to welcome recent figures stating that there were 760 apprenticeship starts in 2014/15 in Crawley – up by 30 on the previous year.
While Crawley is home to a variety of leading national and global companies, finding the right kind of work, or getting back in to employment after a period of absence, can be difficult.
