Crawley MP, Henry Smith, has welcomed new advisers to give intensive support to troubled families and help to get them into work.
These employment advisers will provide practical support, including CV writing, job interview skills and highlight training opportunities and job vacancies in Crawley.
New figures have also shown that Local Authorities across the country have successfully turned around the lives of 1,675 troubled families after just 9 months of the 3 year programme.
Commenting, Henry said:
“Across West Sussex, 1,165 families have been identified as needing extra support and help to turn their lives around. The extra employment specialists will provide practical help to put adults from troubled families on the path back to work.
“A troubled family is one that has serious problems, such as parents not working, mental health problems and children not in school. Families like these cause serious problems in our community and cost local services a lot of time and money routinely responding to these problems.
“The Government believes that 120,000 troubled families cost the taxpayer an estimated £9 billion per year, equivalent to £75,000 per family. This is spent on protecting the children in these families and responding to the crime and anti-social behaviour they perpetrate. The costs are reflected in the fact that children who live in troubled families are 36 times more likely to be excluded from school and six times more likely to have been in care or to have contact with the police.”
