At the Conservative Party Conference last week the Prime Minister said that the referendum result in June was not just a vote to leave the EU – it was about something much broader.
It was about a deep, justified sense that for many people the world works well for a privileged few but not for them. Our society should work for everyone.
Our economy should work for everyone, however if your pay has stayed the same for several years and the cost of living increases, it doesn’t feel like it’s working for you.
Over the last six years we have seen more people in work than ever before, the lowest paid taken out of income tax, three million new apprenticeships and a new National Living Wage.
But more still needs to be done, to ensure government is at the service of the people.
That means things such as:
- Reforming corporate governance to ensure all businesses are run accountably and with the long-term interest clearly in mind.
- Building more homes.
- Strengthening workers’ rights so people are properly protected at work.
- Getting immigration under control, with leaving the EU giving us an opportunity have a system that works for our country.
- Continuing to invest in our NHS – £10 billion extra over this parliament, which is only possible because of the strong economic foundations built since 2010.
- Protecting those who cannot work by ending the mandatory retesting of work capability for those with chronic health conditions, that induce stress but do nothing at all to help.
While Labour remain divided and divisive, completely out of touch with the concerns of families in Crawley and the country, it’s only the Conservatives who can make these changes happen.
As the Prime Minister said; political visions are not enough on their own – you need to put the hours and the effort in too, but if you do, great things can happen and great changes can take place.
