One of the great parts of any Olympic Games is to see how our country comes together in support of athletes representing Team GB.
I’m writing this piece during Rio 2016, and it has been phenomenal to see so many of our athletes exceed expectation.
Watching this year’s Games, I’ve been thinking back to London 2012. It was extremely special to see the Olympic Torch Relay, which started in Olympia in Greece, the site of the Ancient Olympic Games, come through our town on its way to the Olympic Stadium in London.
The Relay travelled around Sussex, and our very own Maria Hains was a Torchbearer in Worthing.
The Paralympic Games in Rio begin on 7th September. I’m looking forward to supporting Crawley’s Ben Jesson, who will be representing Great Britain in shooting, an event which commences the following day.
Many of us are looking forward to seeing Ben compete in the Paralympics again, and I was pleased to write to congratulate him on his selection in the GB squad earlier in the year.
Following Ben’s debut at London 2012, we will be cheering him on at the Paralympics in Rio.
As a town we can be proud of him, and of every GB Olympian and Paralympian representing our great country.
